Bird's Wildlife & Nature

Uganda

TRIP REPORT

Bird’s Wildlife & Nature ventured to Uganda once again in search of the wealth of natural wonders this landlocked country has to offer. We began in Entebbe and the Mabamba swamp which was home to the mighty Shoebill in all its prehistoric glory and we were given our first taste of the papyrus swamps. Two days around Lake Mburo added our first big game and some quality savannah birds as well as the elusive Finfoot and Hippos on the lake itself before the long journey to Bwindi where we spent an emotional couple of days trekking after the Gorillas and fabled Grauer’s Broadbill. Nearly every bird we saw was new. Down to Queen Elizabeth NP where Lions, Hyena and Elephants tried to outshine the birdlife but the sight of hundreds of swirling African Skimmers and a mile long bank of Pied Kingfisher nests takes some beating. On to Kibale where Green Breasted Pitta gave itself up in the gloom and we got up close and personal with the Chimpanzees, a host of Barbets and some very rare Pigeons. From here we stayed a night in Masindi before a spectacular morning on the Royal Mile where Chocolate Backed and African Dwarf Kingfishers caught the eye and then up to the famous Murchison Falls NP for more big game action and some savannah specialities like Brown Chested Lapwings and Denham’s Bustards. All too soon we were wending our way back towards Entebbe and home but not before a wonderful couple of hours trekking White Rhinos at Ziwa. Our final morning in the Entebbe Botanical Gardens gave us even more new birds with big eyed Bat Hawks and ridiculous red punked Ross’s Turacos which was a fantastic way to round up a magical two weeks in this fantastic country.
