This has always been one of our favourite tours to run and this year’s trip certainly did not disappoint. With many of our bird and Mammal targets seen well, a variety of brilliant food throughout the tour, stunning accommodation, including the World-famous Borneo Rainforest Lodge and of course a fantastic local guide. Our tour started in the and ended In Kota Kinabalu, on our first excursion we visited a small Island of the coast where we nailed our first two targets three targets, the Philippine Megapode, Mangrove Blue Flycatcher and Mangrove Whistler. We then made our way to Pine Resorts Hotel where we would spend a couple of days searching for rare and stunning birds in Mount Kinabalu National Park. Our three main targets were all seen, the Whitehead’s Trogon, Spiderhunter and Broadbill, with a few added bonuses like the Everett’s Thrush and Sunda Owlet thrown in. We then moved to the lowlands of Sepilok where the weather and birds changed drastically. With the new habitat we managed to see a number of new target species like the Black-crowned Pitta, Sabah Partridge and one of the highlight Mammal species of the tour, the Western Tarsier. Gomantong Cave and the Kinabatangan River provided us with our best Mammal sightings of the tour as we saw our first Orangutans and Proboscis Monkeys and we even had a surprise sighting of the rare Bornean Pygmy Elephant. Birds were of course fantastic in these area with Many of the Hornbill species seen, along with several species of Trogon and Kingfisher. We then made our way to the Danum Valley where we would spend three nights at the incredible Borneo Rainforest Lodge. The food, the service and just about everything was out of this World, including the wildlife. Blue-headed Pitta, Great Argus and FIVE Bornean Bristleheads were just a few of the highlights, accompanied with Leopard Cat, Slow Loris and almost alien like Culugo. Overall, the tour was a great success as we saw a lot of the outstanding wildlife Sabah has to offer and we also got to sample some of the finest Asian cuisine and hospitality along the way. We can’t wait to return again in 2025!
