Sri Lanka – Endemics
March 2024

TRIP REPORT

Spurfowl for Report

Sri Lanka Spurfowl, one of our main endemic targets!

Our hot and sultry trip to Sri Lanka was a magical experience, and with our wonderful
guide Saman and trusty driver Asela we explored the mid and southern half of this
remarkable island. In the process the group collectively experienced 232 species of
bird including all 34 endemics. Some can be very tricky but even the Whistling Thrush
and Scaly Thrushes posed and the Bush-Warblers put on a great show. Add to this a
fantastic 56 gaudy Butterflies, 28 species of Odonata, 19 Mammals including an
amazing three Leopards, Fishing Cat, Asian Elephants, Water Buffalo, Sambar and
three Primates, 17 Herps with Mugger Crocodiles, funky forest Lizards and giant Water
Monitors and a host of other Invertebrates and fascinating flora. This fantastic tour was
simply wall to wall wildlife, and everywhere we visited there was something new!
We enjoyed some incredibly local food, and were met with wonderful hospitality at all
the lodges we stayed at – we were very well looked after and the people of this beautiful
country were incredibly welcoming where ever we went. Apart from all the amazing
wildlife we saw, we still had time to throw in some ancient palaces and more recent,
colonial culture, plus a visit to a working tea plantation, and incredible sights like the
Lion Rock of Sigariya, and the amazing city of Kandy. This was an adventure that none
of us will ever forget.
