Standardwing (Semioptera wallacii) by Andrew Sebastian

Sulawesi & Halmahera
Aug 15th - 30th, 2026

There are some destinations in the world that are very special, and Sulawesi and Halmahera is one! With more endemic birds than any other area in the region it represent a once in a life-time opportunity to witness, some amazing seldom seen wildlife. One of the biggest draws is the unique and very sought after Standardwing, formerly known as Wallace’s Standardwing, an outlandish and strange looking bird-of-paradise. To witness this bird on its display grounds sets you among the most elite of birders. But its not just this remarkable bird that makes our tour so special, its the number of other incredible endemics, found nowhere else in the world. We will be looking for a large proportion of Sulawesi’s 70 or so endemic birds, plus several unique and interesting mammals. This is kingfisher heaven and we can expect over 10 species of these dazzling birds, with Scaly-breasted and Sulawesi Lilac Kingfisher high on our target list. Another couple of very sought after birds include Ivory-breasted Pitta, Satanic Nightjar, Knobbed Hornbill and Purple-bearded Bee-eater. The extraordinary Maleo, a megapode which uses thermal heat to incubate its eggs in a soil mound will be a treat to see, while an array of night-birds include Speckled, Ochre-bellied and Cinnabar Boobooks, Moluccan Scops Owl and the superb Moluccan Owlet-Nightjar. This tour visits the wonderful island of Halmahera, the largest of the Moluccas islands, and that’s where we see the Standardwing, and visit a hide for Ivory-breasted Pitta, as well as seek out a host of other birds. Another key species is the Hylocitrea, a type of whistler that is monotypic, the only one its its family. To finish off our incredible adventure we will visit the famous National Park of Lore Lindu. This is a marvellous place that holds a huge amount of very rarely seen birds and our time here will be well spent searching them out. As the accommodation is a bit basic in the park, we are offering this as an addition to our tour so that you can choose to go here or not. Our Sulawesi and Halmahera tour is something very special, so start packing and join us!
